Route Description
Dromara Cycling Club’s Coastal
Tour, Looking for record turn out.
Dromara Cycling
Club’s “Coastal” is an annual event for many cyclists. From the leisure
cyclist to the more focused fitness or club rider the coastal has something
for everyone. Two distances are offered, 90 km or 125 km, starting from
Dromara Football club at 9:30 am on Sunday 13 May 2007. The tour offers a
good early season run, warmer weather, and a fabulous scenic route taking
in much of the south Down coastline and the shores of Strangford Lough.
With a food stop at Strangford and the promise of a pint and plenty of
craic at the finish in Dromara, this is a great day out.
This year the club
is looking for a record turn out, not only to encourage more people to
experience the pleasures of group riding, but also to raise money for
two very different but worthy causes.
Firstly, the Shimna
Valley Holiday Home of the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children.
A unique retreat nestling in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains, this
centre was created to nurture families coping with the everyday demands
of caring for a child diagnosed with cancer.
The second is for
a local rider, Steven Baines, who was injured in a freak accident at
the Tour of Ards in March. A well-known and respected member of the
cycling community, Steven is now out of hospital and on the road to recovery,
however that road may be a long one and Dromara Cycling Club, alongside
Steven’s many friends in the local racing scene, want to support him
in returning to his usual good health.

Stangford
Lough is one of the largest sea inlets in the British Isles
and one of the most important marine sites in Europe. It has 150 miles of twisting coastline and
120 islands. Our coastal tour of County Down has it all, stunning
sea views, rolling green drumlins, quaint villages and the small
inlets and islands of Strangford Lough. A day out

Coastal Tour 2002
Sunday 19th
May 2002 brought a stormy wet day in which 45 brave soles tackled
the 65 mile route. PHOTOS £165 was raised
for charity. In December
2002 we handed over a cheque for £800 to Shimna Valley Holiday House
in Newcastle. We hope for good
weather and a large turnout for a revised event in 2004.
