Personal Testimonies

Still not sure if joining a cycling club is for you.....?
Read on to hear some personal stories from some of our members.

FROM BERNIE

I joined the club in November 2008 at which time I was a forty-something busy working mum, a smoker and not particularly fit.  I had been cycling on my own for a few months  in preparation for a charity leisure cycle which I’d done at the end of the summer.  I’d always thought I wasn’t fast enough, fit enough, strong enough, young enough etc. to join a cycling club, that was just for elite racing cyclists!!..  A friend was joining around that time – we’d heard that Dromara was a really friendly club and I agreed to join the club with her, wondering what I was letting myself in for.

The first few weekend runs out with the club I struggled to keep up, but they were really very good and patient, slowing down to my pace, and it was no time until I felt comfortable with the pace of the group.  Trying to get up the hills, puffing and panting on a bike is a great motivator for giving up the nicotine, so I gave up smoking fairly quickly.

Since then I haven’t looked back and within 6 months of joining the Club I’d completed a 4 day cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head, which is almost 400 miles, and less than a year on from joining the Club I’d done the Dromara Hilly 125.  On that first Sunday run in November there’s no way I would have thought that either was possible.  If I can do that, anyone can.

Apart from the cycling and the obvious benefits of getting fitter and stronger, it’s great to get away from everything and get out at the weekends in the fresh air and the elements and to make new friends. It’s also an opportunity to see all around the countryside and go to places you’ve never been.  I would recommend it to anyone.

FROM STEPHEN
In February 2002 I bought an old second-hand bike with 5 gears and after cycling down to the Anahilt crossroads (1 mile) and back I was exhausted.
Over the next few days I did a few more small loops and finally plucked up the courage to cycle to Hillsborough (5 miles).  I did not know if  could even make it never mind cycle back.

I surprised myself and not only was I able to do it I turned around and cycled home again. Needing a challenge I signed up for the Border Trek in April 2002 and had 2 months to get fit from being able to do 10 miles to get over 50 miles.  From April it seemed to rain for 2 months solid and the furthest I ever got was Newcastle and back. - about 37 miles!

I ended up doing the 2002 Border Trek on my own never having gone further than 37 miles!

I got to Sligo OK and was so pleased with myself that the next day on the way back to Enniskillen I made a big effort and overtook  a group of club cyclists. I would show them - I felt like a Tour De France cyclist - for 5 mins - and then they caught and passed me back. So that is why you need to join a club!

FROM MICHAEL
How cycling in Dromara CC has changed my life:

I was a very competitive golfer from the age of 16 and played of a 3 handicap. On Sunday mornings I use to cycle on my mountain bike before going to church doing approximately 10 miles. Each time I arrived home (after the 10 miles) my wife use to laugh at me as I was so unfit and the 10 miles really killed me.

In October 2007 I purchased a Road Bike from Downey Cycles. That day Seamus Downey told me I needed to join a cycling club and my reply was "I don't think so, I'm a golfer and that's my number 1 sport". Christmas
2007 I decided to go out on my road bike for spin and bumped into Seamus Downey and his son Mark, they asked me to join them and when I arrived home that afternoon I told my wife I was joining a cycling club (I was hooked!).

Cycling in a proper Club makes this sport so much fun and you really don't realise it until you do it. Not only that but cycling with experienced and knowledgeable people who know what their talking about re equipment, setting your bike up properly, diet, nutrition, training etc etc makes your cycling much safer and more enjoyable.

I'm no longer a golfer having played golf for 22 years and I'm bike mad.
I joined Dromara CC in May 2008 starting off with the leisure Saturday/Sunday runs. I then started to go along to our Thursday Club Nights participating in TT's and road races and the fun and enjoyment has just got better and better.

Dromara CC caters for all levels which really worked for me. If you just want to ride for fun and have great company our club offers this in abundance. If you want to progress and really challenge yourself at TT's and races our club cater for this as well and it's all done in a very friendly and competitive way!

Come and join us - it's just brill:):):)
