Round 16
Road Race  - Old Belfast Road, Blacks Lane, Glassdrumman Road, Ballynahinch (2.24 mile circuit)

24 July 2008

Another exciting evening of cycle racing and it was back to the Glassdrumman triangle again just outside Ballynahinch (map) .  Twenty-seven riders signed on, just one less than the last race here back on the 1 May 2008.  This was Dromara Cycling Club's 16th event in the club's 2008 calendar and we were presented with almost perfect weather conditions, dry, bright with only a slight breeze to take away the closeness of the temperature (20oC).  The evening's racing started around 7:30 after Trevor and Stephen had worked out the time handicaps.  Ronnie was only treating this evenings fun as a bit of practice as they are due to take part in this weekend's Ards 3 day race.  As such he was not handicapped as he should have been and was allowed to join in with the slower groups.  Davy joined Paul Smyth in the two man scratch group.  Davy and Paul worked hard throughout the race and caught the leading group in the last couple of laps.  Once they had caught the leading group, Trevor made the executive decision to cut the race short (from 10 laps to 9 laps) and, as expected, there were no complaints from the riders (most didn't even realise that a lap had been taken out!)  There was another great turn out of helpers to run the event both marshalls and timekeepers.  Many thanks to all of you especially  the timekeeping team who had an almost full-time job keeping track of the riders and their times.

The juniors and ladies had a good race over 6 laps and the 6 laps seems to have been a milestone for both Marcus and Stephen who both stopped in this lap.  Noel broke some spokes and had to stop for a wheel change costing him time, Neill got to the last lap then fell off his bike after suffering from a cramp.  He bravely climbs back on, determined to complete the race.  Ross Galway cramped up on the final run in, just getting around the final corner and having to free wheel over the line.  Apart from the 3 road racers who crossed the line first, the big surprise was the ever improving Mark McKnight who finished third overall.  Well done Mark.  Also appearing tonight was Michael Pyper, first time out in his new Dromara cycling clothing and smiling on every lap, James Gilpin out on his new very lightweight bicycle, Cyril Whimpanny appearing in his first race, Peter Bryson celebrating this 40 birthday today (and wearing a nice badge to prove it)  and Kieran Thomas who has just joined the club and completed his first cycle race.
