Dromara CC Club League - Round 13
25 mile or 16 mile TT - Banbridge Road, Castlewellan (
map)
25 June 2009

Round 13 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league took place this evening on the road to Banbridge from Castlewellan.  On offer tonight was the club's longest time trial, 25 miles, as well as the shorter 16 mile challenge.  The increased distance did not put off the club members with 33 riders taking part, almost 2.5 times more than at last years event.  This may have had  something to do with the excellent cycling weather we have had all week.

Sorting out the riders and their starting order was Peter Bryson and Derek Hanna.  The majority (24) of the riders opted for the longer distance and first away was Val O'Neill with husband Phil setting off 5 minutes behind Val.  Also taking part in the 25 mile event was club secretary Trevor Annett competing in his first event of the year.  In was good to see Paul Smyth back competing on the bike after his fall two weeks ago.

Taking part in her first time trial with the club was Mary Hunter who opted for the shorter 16  mile distance.  Also taking part in the 16 mile event was junior sensation Sean Downey now with french team VC La Pomme.

Fastest in the 25 mile trial was David McKnight who again finished under the hour and managed to shave 1 minute 23 seconds off his time from last year.  Behind David was long distance expert  Nigel Sudlow who had managed to finish 2 minutes and 46 seconds faster than he did last year but just over 4 minutes behind David.  Neill Currie was third fastest just ahead of the recovered Paul Smyth.  Further down the list and the rivarly between brothers Chris and Gavin continued with younger brother Chris getting the upper hand finishing over 2½ minutes ahead of Gavin.  Trevor made an ill-advised attempt to repair his speedo while cycling and managed to cut the top of his finger on the spokes and spend the next mile nursing his wounds.

In the 16 mile event it was no surprise that semi-pro Sean Downey finished first in an excellent 34 minutes 17 seconds.  Behind Sean was another visitor James Adair from West Down Wheelers who finished in  43 minutes 27 seconds.  First Dromara rider back was Stephen Wallace taking just over 45 minutes.

Many thanks to all the time keepers and marshalls.  Next week we are back to the 10 mile time trials this time on the Killyleagh Road in Downpatrick.
