Dromara CC Club League - Round 14
10 mile TT - Killyleagh Road, Downpatrick (
map)
2 July 2009

The Killyleagh Road in Downpatrick was the venue for Round 14 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league.  This was a new course for the club and 35 cyclists showed up to try it out including 5 women and 3 visitors.  The start was just opposite the bowling club and special thanks should go to Pat McCormick for allowing us to use the facilities at the club house.  Derek Hanna volunteered at the last minute to do the timekeeping and he was ably supported by Brendan Monaghan and Tony Mallon to get the riders started at 7:15.  First away was Anne Maguire who was the slowest on the night but her continued improvement at these events meant that, after time handicaps were added, Anne was awarded maximum points for the evening.  Following Anne was Ross Galway who set the 7th fastest time (a personal best) and was well up among the top riders despite the fact that he does not use special time trial equipment.

It was first cat rider David McKnight who set the fastest time of 22 minutes and 43 seconds to cover the 10 mile distance.  Following David was Ronnie Smyth, recently successful at the Newry 3 day stage race, just 38 seconds slower.  Behind Ronnie were the two visiting riders from Phoenix Cycling Club, Fergus Rooney and Cathal Smyth.  Marcus Magowan had an excellent ride on this fast course setting a personal best time of under 25 minutes and finishing 5th fastest. Behind Marcus was vet rider John Ruddell from Ards CC also setting a time below 25 minutes.  Further down the list and in the battle of the Magowan brothers it was again younger brother Chris who finished 19 seconds ahead of Gavin and set his own personal best time.  We had only one rider, James Gilpin, who was unable to complete the distance.

Well done to the timekeeping and marshalling team for organising an excellent event.  Thankfully the threatening clouds did not open and the riders were able to enjoy a dry circuit.  Next Thursday we return to the Old Belfast Road in Ballynahinch for a club road race.
