Dromara CC Club League - Round 4
10 mile TT - Lurgan Road, Dromore

23 April 2009

The forecast had been for heavy rain this evening which thankfully only turned out to be 'ordinary' rain which was only present for the start of round 4 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league.  Trevor Annett, the club secretary, was kept very busy sorting out the 42 riders who had turned up in the wet conditions ready to put themselves through the difficult 10 mile time trial along the Lurgan Road outside Dromore.  Among the riders gathered tonight were five guests from other local clubs as well as one cyclist who was not attached to any club.  At this venue last year there were only 19 riders to deal with but tonight, given the large numbers, the riders were started at 30 second intervals instead of the usual one minute gap.  First away was Caroline Patterson who was just getting back into competitive cycling this year.  Caroline was followed 30 seconds later by Dromara's young star Zak Hanna.  Many thanks to Stephen Younge for his assistance in getting the riders underway.

After 22 minutes Trevor had got all the riders onto the road but it wasn't long before the first rider was coming back, in this case it was racing sensation Darren Weir.  Darren set the fastest time on the night of 24 minutes and 3 seconds and, despite the conditions, this time was 9 seconds faster than Darren got at this venue last year.  Darren had also been 6 seconds faster than fellow road racer David McKnight and thirty seconds faster than racing veteran Ronnie Smyth.  Only one second slower than Ronnie was young Paul Smyth who was fastest in the three 2-up time trials held earlier this year.   This was the first 10 mile individual time trial this season and the times achieved tonight will form the basis of the time handicap for the next time trial.

Next week is the first road race of the season which is to be held on the Glasdrumman Road outside of Ballynahinch.

Note to all riders.  Drafting not allowed.  See time trial rules below

DROMARA CC - TIME TRIAL RULES
from Derek Hanna
  • You are responsible for your own safety. Obey traffic laws. The road is not closed for the event. You are deemed to be a regular road user.
  • Line up at the starting line on the hard shoulder in departure number order. Stay off the travelled part of the roadway.
  • Missing your start time means you go last.
  • Respect the rights of other road users. Allow plenty of room when passing pedestrians or other cyclists.
  • Do not ride with your head down.
  • A marshal is on duty to mark the turnaround point and to vouch that riders reach the turnaround point. The marshal is not authorized to advise you on whether you should turn.
  • The decision to turn is yours alone. You must check in both directions well in advance of the turnaround point to determine whether it is safe to turn. If in doubt, err on the side of waiting.
  • Helmet use is mandatory.
  • Warming up on the course after the first rider is away is forbidden. Plenty of room in the opposite direction!
  • No drafting is allowed ..ie.. sitting behind another rider.
  • Call out your name loud and clear as you approach and cross the finish line.
  • Riders shall not approach the timekeepers for times until all riders are finished
