On Thursday 9 September 2010, Dromara Cycling Club organised a hill climb event at the Diamond Road just outside Dromore.  The climb was just 0.62 miles but the hill was steep, starting from the Gall Bog Road and climbing up the hill to the Orange Hall.  Timekeepers were positioned at the top and bottom of the hill with syncronized watches.  The 18 riders were set off at one minute intervals and arrived at the top of the hill looking exhausted.  First away was youth rider Zak Hanna who set a time of 2 minutes and 22 seconds.  He then stood and watched the other riders and their climbing technique.  Having seen all the riders come up Zak went down the hill to try again.  He managed to go almost 8 seconds faster and was much more pleased with his second run.

Fastest on the night was visitor Matthew Adair (Banbridge CC) who set a great time of just under 1 minute 40 seconds.  Second fastest was our own Ronnie Smyth in just over 1 minute 50 seconds.  It was another visitor from the Banbridge club, Scott Daly, who was third fastest overall and the last of the riders who finished under 2 minutes with his time of 1m 57s.

Winner of the 2010 club league was Simon Welby who set a time of just over 2 minutes. Simon was less than one second faster than Gavin Magowan who was runner up in the club league, fifth fastest on the night.  A trophy has been put forward for this event by racing legend David McKnight for the fastest "non-open racer", this turned out to be Gary Gibson who was sixth overall with a time just under 2 minutes 7 seconds.  Fastest junior was Ryan Mallon finishing his run in just under 2 minutes 13 seconds.

Many thanks to the timekeepers Derek Hanna and Trevor Annett and to the marshals Stephen Wallace and Ivan Bradford.  Resident film maker Nigel Sudlow took a video of the event (see below).  Next week we have the final event of the road calendar with another short hill climb this time at the Begney Hill Road in Dromara.  Start time 06:30 pm on Thursday 16 September 2010.  The road racing season concludes with refreshments in Square One afterwards.
