Dromara CC Club League - Round 5
10 mile time trial, Dundrum Line, Dromara (map)

28 April 2011

Round 5 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league was held on the Dundrum Road just outside the village of Dromara.  This venue had meant to have been used for Round 6 but after consulation it was felt that it would be better to run another 10 mile time trial before the first of the club's road races.

There was the same number of attendees at this round as had been in Round 4, 35, although not the same riders.  This week we had five guests from other clubs joining us to challenge themselves against the clock on a circuit that was just shy of the 10 miles (9.9).  First away was John Heaney competing in his first event at the club league.  Going one minute behind John was the only youth entry of the day Zak Hanna.  Zak was followed by Ted McKibben who was taking on his third event to date.  The remaining riders were set off at one minute gaps until the 10th rider, Peter Bryson, when the remaining riders were given just 30 second intervals.

Fastest on the night was again Gavin Magowan in a time just under 24 minutes with his main rival Ronnie Smyth 30 seconds slower.  Gavin's brother Chris was third fastest in a time of 24 minutes 41 seconds, 13 seconds ahead of Damien McDonald (TVR).  Marcus Magowan was 5th with Cecil Conn (Phoenix CC) the only other rider to finish in under 26 minutes.

Comparing the times set tonight against the average time set for a 10 mile time trial for each individual rider, the competitor with the biggest time gain over his average was Rodney Stewart, who was just over 1 minute faster than his average.  Next best improver was Dennis McMullan with Derek Hanna third best.  Brian Wilson was 43 seconds faster than his average to take 4th overall, with Bob Patterson 5th and Conor Rice 6th.  Zak Hanna had set a personal best time to finish 7th overall, 28 seconds faster than his average.

Well done to all the riders.

Many thanks to the timekeepers and all the marshals.  Round 6 is next Thursday (5 May 2011) and will be the first of the club road races.  It will be held on the Old Belfast Road outside of Ballynahinch with sign on from 6:15 pm.

Timekeeper: Philip Boyle and Andrew Wilson
Marshals: Adrian Finnegan, Kevin McDonald, David McClurg, Ivan Bradford, Ian Proctor and Ryan Mallon
