Cyclo Cross Event
Lisburn Civic Centre
2 November 2008
Hosted by Dromara Cycling Club

Sunday 2 November 2008

Dromara Cycling Club hosted the fourth round of the 2008 Ulster Cyclo Cross Race League at the The Island Centre in Lisburn.  This was the fourth time this venue has been used by the club for this event and this year again the weather was kind, cool but dry.  As in previous years the course made use of parts of the Lagan tow path, starting from the Civic Centre and heading towards Belfast, before cutting into a nearby field for some challenging off road riding.  As an addition this year the club got premission from local farmer Mr D Reid to use one of his fields as part of the course.  The field was full of barley stubble and had tractor tyre ruts for the cyclists to negotiate.  The riders then exited the field by dropping down a steep embankment to the bridge over the river.  Once over the bridge the course made use of some of the grassy areas weaving in and out of the trees.  The course finished after another section of tow path before crossing the foot bridge over the Island itself.  The riders were then faced with the now famous steps up to the bridge over the canal.  This course is a favourite among riders as over 50% of the surface is tarmac and compacted gravel allowing for much greater speed and flow around the course.

Over 70 riders took part today starting with the under 8s who had one lap of the smaller course.  It was a Banbridge one two with Stuart Dunlop just beating team mate Shenna McKivergian who was just seconds ahead of Dromara's Ben Hanna.

The under 10s had two laps of the smaller course and this time it was the turn of XMTB to take the first two spots closely won by Greg Bell over team mate Joel Smyth.  Cian McConvey from Newry Wheelers completed the top three.

For the under 12 race the course was made slightly longer and the five riders had 3 laps to complete.  It was XMTB's Alex Bell who won over close rival Rachel Mayne from Banbridge CC with Luc Hanna of Newry Wheelers completing the podium.

The start line was then moved to the field where the mountain bike support race involving 22 riders along with 5 under 14s and 3 under 16s took place.  These events covered the full course including the barley field.  The under 16 and mountain bikers had 6 laps to do with the under 14s completing 4.
The results for the under 14 event was similar to the under 10 event in that the first two places were taken by XMTB this time it was Chris Oakley who got the better of Natanael Smyth.  Dromara CC's Zak Hanna got the bronze medal to match the one his brother Ben got in the under 8s.

In the under 16 category it was the dominate Matthew Adair, Banbridge CC who continued his winning streak followed by XMTB's Robbie Lamont and first time cyclo cross rider Ryan Mallon from Dromara cycling club finishing third.

Once first cat rider Glenn Kinning (Castlereagh CC) signed up for the mountain bike race all thought that he was going to dominate this event and sure enough, Glenn did not disappoint.  From a slow start Glenn got to the front and stayed there lapping many of the other riders on his way.  Trying to keep up with Glenn was mtb vet Paul McMenamin (Leisure Lakes) who finished a respectable second ahead of expert rider Ross Galway from Dromara CC.  Among the women's mtb riders it was Julie McCorry (XMTB / Bikedock) who beat fellow team mate Claire Oakley.

The big event of the day was the main cyclo cross event kicking off slightly later than usual.  Twenty six riders lined up in the field before flying across the grass and into the trees.  This was a very tight race for the first four laps before the clear winner on the day Liam McGreevy from Banbridge cycling club managed to break away from the man who has won all the previous rounds Mark Allen, Swords CC. A great victory for Liam, today wearing his Cycling Ulster colours. Third place was again a tussle with Aiden McDonald from Apollo CT, managing to stay ahead of  Graham Boyd of XMTB. The first vet home was Peter McConville of Newry Wheelers in 5th and Banbridge's William Mulligan took 6th after a great scrap with his chief rival Robbie Lamont XMTB in 7th.
Francine Meehan of Tullamore CTC was the only lady entry into the cyclo-cross race, out of only four who came up from the South of Ireland. Francine had a great first Cyclo-Cross race for her and really enjoyed the challenge of the course. She finished ahead of a lot of the male racers, well done.  There was a slight mix up with the timekeeping team as to the the number of laps to be completed but hopefully this did not spoil an otherwise excellent day's cycling.

After the racing, riders enjoyed the hot soup and rolls while standing around chatting about the day's events.  Many thanks to all the members at Dromara cycling club who helped out on the day.
