Trailquest League -
Round 3 - 2007/08
Shimna Valley, Bryansford Road
20 January 2008

The third and final round of this years Trailquest Winter League, organised by Dromara Cycling Club, took place today out of Shimna Valley Centre, Bryansford Road, Newcastle.  This was a busy cycling day with Dromara CC organising a leisure cycle from the same location and the event did clash with the start of XMTB's MTB League in Bangor.  With a drizzly start to the day and the clouds hanging low over the Mournes, it was great to see 27 teams incorporating 60 riders out for fun, hard slog and lots of muck. (Some of the lanes were really sticky!)

The markers for this round were spread as far north as Castlewellan, west beyond Tollymore Forest Park, east as far as Maghera and south as far as Drinnahilly. The riders were given a map (on both sides of an A4 sheet) with 22 markers to find plus one bonus marker which was located at the Shimna Valley centre entrance. As per the last round, we only had one problem with a marker and again it looks like someone was using it for target practice !
(Map of the route that Team Purple took is given here)

The results of round three were:

Two teams got maximum points (470) but Retro Grouch did not make it back in time and suffered a penalty which dropped 14 points from their total.
Team "Dunshann" arrived home more than 30 minutes late and unfortunately lost all the 270 points that they had worked so hard to obtain.
The average number of markers reached was 15.

After the event the riders enjoyed soup and sandwiches in the centre itself.

Finally looking back on the 3 events we can see that 9 teams did all 3 events, 9 teams did two and 38 did one (based on the teams keeping the same name throughout all 3 events).
